Wallace Day will be held this Saturday

BY an accident of history, what will be the landmark 30th annual holding of the Wallace Day March through Lanark comes just a month before the crucial Referendum on Scottish independence.

It’s a coincidence that’s not been lost on the organisers of the event this year, the Clydesdale SNP, who recently took the ritual over from the non-political Lanark Wallace Society who ran it for many years but relinquished the responsibility to the local Nationalists.

This year’s Wallace Day will be on Saturday, August 23 and those wishing to take part are asked to gather at the gates to Lanark Cemetery from 10am to allow the march to commence at 10.30am.

Headed by a pipe band, it will then take the now-traditional route from Hyndford Road via Ladyacre, Bannatyne Street and the High Street to the small monument to William Wallace on the reputed site of his Lanark home in the Castegate.

Wreaths will be laid there as well as at the foot of the nearby famous statue of The Braveheart on Lanark Steeple.
