Warning over bogus workmen

The warning comes after a resident became suspicious when she spotted two men wearing hi-visibility jackets loitering in the vicinity of 
Boclair Crescent in Bearsden on Monday.

She contacted Scottish Water who confirmed none of its employees were working in the area that day.

Now the water board and police are urging people to be vigilant and follow the ‘3 Cs’ advice to help stop those who often prey on householders,particularly the vulnerable and elderly.

A police spokesman said: “Remember a series of simple steps to send them packing –“card, check and call.”

He added: “People assume if workmen have the proper hi-viz jackets on they are legitimate but this is not the case.

“If you are in any doubt at all, just call police.”

He added that the incident in Bearsden is believed to be linked to a similar incident in Drumchapel on the same day.

An elderly lady was conned by a cold caller claiming to be from Scottish Water, who stole a quantity of money from the vulnerable woman.

A spokesman from Scottish Water said: “We are committed to helping reduce crimes carried out by people impersonating as Scottish Water workers.

“Anyone calling on behalf of Scottish Water will always carry an identification card with a photograph.

“They will drive a vehicle clearly marked with our logo.

“Our employees will not ask for, or accept, any money from you at your home.

“If you are in any doubt about the caller’s identity please call our Customer
