Government watchdogs Health Improvement Scotland sent in a team for a general snap inspection on November 11 and 12 before returning to inspect the maternity wards two weeks later.

The report noted that five out of six labour room bed frames were contaminated with blood; both of the antenatal bed frames also had blood on them.

The report also stated that, although all the mattresses inspected in the maternity wards were clean and free from staining, four out of six labour room mattress covers were torn and damaged in a number of places.

The report continued: “We returned on Wednesday, November 26, to re-inspect the maternity wards.

“We inspected eight labour room beds across the maternity wards.

“All eight beds were clean and ready for patient use.
