Kirkintilloch MP Stuart McDonald last week had the opportunity to meet Setsuko Thurlow, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, in the House of Commons.

She was just 13 when the bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945.

Stuart McDonald said: “Her account of that day, the loss of her classmates, close family, the destruction and burning of her city, her burned and poisoned fellow citizens that she and fellow children desperately tried to aid was incredibly harrowing.

“Hibakusha Stories, an organisation which supported this event in parliament, emphasises the importance of first-hand accounts in making people aware of the realities of nuclear war.

“After 1945 there was a concerted effort to supress evidence about the horrendous carnage caused by the Hiroshima atomic bomb. This makes testimony the more important to share.”
