With his distinctive beard and large rucksack, Mr Rae was a familiar presence to many who lived and worked in the town.

One local resident said: “I’d like to pay tribute by saying Jim was a real Kirky legend, happy with his life and a lesson to us all: never judge a book by its cover.”

Diane Campbell, director of governance and regulation at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “We are sorry to hear that Mr Rae has passed away.”
