Westerwood planning decision could affect amenities in Cumbernauld

A HIGHLY controversial planning decision could see 100 new houses being built north of the M80- in a move which has left Westerwood Community Council ‘‘bitterly disappointed.’’

Planners at North Lanarkshire Council gave the plans the green light in principal, delighting Stirling-based builders Ogilvie. The homes in question have been earmarked for St Andrew’s Drive,

However the community council and Cumbernauld Environmental Society has argued that existing infrastructure will be dangerously overstretched.

They believe resources in local schools and surgeries are already stretched to breaking point - and that traffic on Eastfield Road will increase to dangerous levels.

Community Council chairman Gordon Wright said: “Once again a decision affecting the area north of the M80 has been taken by a council who appear to have limited knowledge of the area involved.’’
