Wet weather floods hit the southside

Glasgow has been battered by stormy weather all week — and the bad news is that the forecast looks set to continue.

Severe wind and rain warning hit headlines at the weekend — and by Monday, enough rain had fallen to cause traffic problems across Glasgow and East Ren.

On Nithsdale Road, resurfacing work was put on hold while surface water was cleared, causing more congestion near Dumbreck rail station, where traffic was already down to single file.

Extra readers submitted more problem areas, including Sinclair Drive in Battlefield, where police were forced to cordon off the flooded street, and Orchard Park Drive in Giffnock, which Marie Ferguson said “constantly floods with heavy rain”.

@Dennynews tweeted a picture of traffic struggling on Paisley Road West, adding: “Welcome to Cessnock, twinned with Venice.”

Strong winds are forecast across the far north of Scotland from Thursday, prompting a yellow weather warning over ‘Storm Abigail’ from the Met Office.

And while no warning has been issued for the central belt, the forecast for Glasgow includes “severe gale southerly winds bringing outbreaks of rain” on Thursday, and “windy with heavy showers” Friday to Sunday.

Storm Abigail is the first to be officially named by the Met Office, following a call for names earlier this year.
