Wheely good way to spend your birthday

Finley Smith (11) and his brother Robbie Smith (8), who attend Busby Primary School, and their cousin Freya Stuart (7), who attends Douglas Primary School, took part in the event to raise funds for their “adopted” Guide Dog puppy, Libby, earlier this month.

Robbie thought it would be a nice way to celebrate his eighth birthday which was the same day.

The three cousins have a link to the Guide Dogs charity as their great grandfather Bob Forrester was the manager of the Guide Dog Centre in Forfar for many years.

The children’s granny, Linsey Forrester, approached CalMac Ferries who waived its ferry charges, while Mapes of Millport, waived its cycle hire charges.

The Ritz Cafe gave the youngsters a well deserved ice cream at the end of their challenge.

It was great to have so much support from the local community.

The children set themselves a fundraising target of £200, but through their “gentle” persuasion of friends, neighbours and family, they have managed to more than treble their original target, raising more than £600 for the charity.

They plan to visit the Forfar Guide Dog Centre soon to see exactly where their hard earned money has gone.

The Guide Dogs Training School, in Forfar, opened for business in 2007 and provides foundation training for around 200 dogs each year.
