The second woman (67) is being treated in hospital for an arm injury, and the driver of the Range Rover — a 42-year-old man — was not injured in the crash.

Constable Paul McNamee, of the road policing unit, has appealed for information.

He commented: “There were a number of people in the area when the incident happened. We have managed to speak to some of them — however, we would still appeal for further witnesses to come forward.”

Anyone with information can contact the police on non-emergency number 101.

Barrhead Road was closed for approximately five and a half hours as a result of the incident, re-opening at 10.15pm on the Saturday night.
