Woman attacked in Glasgow city centre as she walks home

A young woman has been attacked by a man as she headed home at Charing Cross in Glasgow city centre.

Fortunately, three passers-by came to her aid when they heard the screams of the 26-year-old.

Police said the woman was grabbed from behind and dragged for a short distance by her assailant in the attack around 10.15pm on Monday, January 22.

She had been walking along Newton Place just off Sauchiehall Street near to Elderslie Street.

Police, who are appealing for information, said three men in their late 20s/early 30s, came to her aid, pulling the man off her.

The suspect then made off in an unknown direction. He is described as white, in his 50s, slim with grey hair and was wearing a long black anorak.

Detective Constable Ashley Convery, Drumchapel CID, said: “This was a very upsetting experience for the young woman who was heading home. She is very distressed by what happened and indeed it took a few days before she could come to police to say what happened.

“I am very keen to speak to the three men who came to her aid as I am sure it is because of them that this attack didn’t escalate and also they will have information that will assist us greatly in catching the man responsible.”
