Woman helps police recover a large haul of stolen goods

A trawl through online shopping sites and a bit of detective work led a Clarkston woman to find the thief who stole her mountain bike from her shed — and more than 30 other stolen items.

Community police say it was a positive example of how the general public can help police nail offenders.

Her initiative helped CID officers to track down a thief they believe has been stealing from garden sheds and other outbuildings in a string of thefts since November 2014.

Investigations led police to an address where they recovered the woman’s bike and 34 other stolen items, many of which have been returned to their owners.

A 33-year-old man was arrested and appeared in court last week where he pled ‘not guilty’ to 35 thefts. He will appear again at a later date.

A police spokesman said: “We’d like to thank the lady for contacting the police.

“This is an example of a member of the public helping the police with investigations. We have been working on this case since November last year and this lady’s call was the breakthrough that led to a man’s arrest.

“On her information, we were able to find the man and obtain a search warrant for his home where we recovered 34 other stolen items, some of which have been returned to their rightfull owners.”
