Women for Indy paint a picture of independence

The Glasgow south branch were at Shawlands Art Village on Sunday, welcoming men, women and children to Art for Aye, an independence-themed afternoon of music, art and workshops.

Guest speakers included MSPs Nicola Sturgeon and Patrick Harvie, journalists Lesley Riddoch and Ruth Wishart, actress Libby McArthur and Vonny Moyes of the National Collective.

Yes voters were also asked to contribute to a blank canvas, sharing their aspirations for an independent Scotland.

Kathleen Caskie, of Women for Independence, told The Extra: “Glasgow South has been remarkable for the Yes campaign and, in particular, Women for Independence.

“Just seven or eight weeks a few women, none of whom knew each other, met up for the first time in Shawlands and decided they’d try to put on a public meeting in Castlemilk. In the meantime, another group of women in Queen’s Park had come together and set up stall at Queen’s Park gate. At the same time, a group of women in East Renfrewshire decided to put on street stalls and campaigned at Clarkston Toll.

“None of this has been organised from the centre — this is just women coming together and deciding this is our time to be heard, and we refuse to be excluded from the constitutional debate.

“We are just ordinary women who think an independent Scotland is a good idea, and now that we have stepped up, we are not going away — we have already organised our post-referendum meeting, with women from all over Scotland, regardless of the result on Thursday.”
