First offender Alicia McKenna lashed out at Christel Doyle in Platform 3, Hamilton Road.

McKenna (31), of Edzell Street, Coatbridge, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court today. She admitted striking Ms Doyle on the face with a tumbler to her injury and permanent disfigurement on September 27 last year.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce claimed his client had been “baited” by a group of women, but admitted her reaction was “appalling”.

He said McKenna, who has a child aged 9 and works in a call centre, had been drunk and “let herself down badly”.

Mr Bruce added: “She is willing to be electronically tagged and do the maximum amount of unpaid work. She could also pay significant compensation to the victim.”

However, Sheriff Shiona Waldron said there was “no alternative” to prison.

The sheriff told McKenna: “I take account of what has been said, the fact you were drunk and this was grossly out of character, and your family responsibilities.

“However, taking a glass to a young woman’s face and scarring her for life is very serious.”
