Your View: the countdown is on for Glasgow Games

This week, to mark the milestone, medals of gold, silver and bronze were unveiled.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow city council, said:“This is the last lap on our preparations for the Games, the biggest event in the city’s history

“It is fitting that we celebrate this landmark by unveiling these fantastic medals, which will reflect modern Glasgow when we host the Games this summer.”

This week, organisers bowed to public pressure and scrapped plans to feature the demolition of a row of multi-storey flats as the centre-piece of the opening ceremony.

We took to the street to ask southsiders: with Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games less than 100 days away, what are you most excited about?

David Bowes (51) from Darnley told The Extra: “I have tickets to badminton. I am a big fan of the sport as I play myself. I am really looking forward to seeing the best in action.”

Samantha Ritchie and Iqra Latief (both 16) are looking forward to the atmosphere across the city. Samantha, from Pollokshaws, said: “I can’t wait to see the gymnastics”, while Iqra added: “Glasgow will be buzzing”.

Three generations of one family showed their Commonwealth spirit. Mena McDowell, out shopping with mum Helen Walsh and daughter Morgan McDowell, commented: “It will bring jobs, money and opportunities to Glasgow.”

But 25-year-old Sam McMillan, from Shawlands, is “not looking forward to the Games one bit.

“They are a disgrace and a waste of money. Schools should come first — they are falling apart.”
