AN APPRENTICESHIP programme which attracted over 150 applications from 16 to 19 year olds from across North Lanarkshire has selected its new apprentices.

Morrison Scotland has taken on 20 new apprentices following a highly competitive recruitment process.

The apprentices, pictured, who joined the company on Monday, August 13, will work on Morrison Scotland’s housing and public buildings repairs and maintenance contracts with North Lanarkshire Council, which incorporates over 37,000 properties.

Three electricians, five joiners, two plumbers, a lift engineer and a mechanical pump engineer, as well as eight business administration apprentices are among the posts.

The inclusion of the eight business administration placements in this year’s intake marks the first time Morrison Scotland has offered any non-trade based apprenticeships.

Willie Docherty, managing director of Morrison Scotland, said: “This programme provides a good deal for everyone. It enables Morrison Scotland to recruit talented young people whilst giving them valuable skills and the opportunity to learn from our experienced workforce.

“I would also like to add that the young people from North Lanarkshire who have applied for posts with Morrison Scotland are a credit to both their parents and the school system; its just a pity I couldn’t offer them all an apprenticeship.”
