Rachel is far from finished

RACHEL Ross has already helped Scotland’s under-15 girls’ team lift silverware this month but the Cumbernauld footballer insists she is far from finished yet.

The 15-year-old striker was appearing for the first time for the Scotland Under-15 girls’ team as they travelled to Belfast on April 1 for the Bob Docherty Trophy.

Ross and her teammates couldn’t have asked for a better start as they beat Northern Ireland 5-0 before drawing with England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

This unbeaten run was enough for Scotland to take home the Bob Docherty Trophy for the first time since 2009 and for only the second time since the competition began in 2007.

However one final test still remains for Greenfaulds High School pupil Ross as they take on England at Toryglen Regional Football Centre in Glasgow on April 20.

And, having also beaten the Auld Enemy 3-1 at St George’s Park before the Bob Docherty Trophy, Ross is in no mood to let the unbeaten record fall at the final hurdle.

“It was brilliant to win the Bob Docherty Trophy, especially since we hadn’t done it for such a long time,” said Ross, who is currently on the books at Rangers.

“Everybody was ecstatic after we won 5-0 in our first game and although we couldn’t repeat it we worked hard to make sure we won the competition because it was really tough.

“We should have won more games but it didn’t happen but thankfully it didn’t matter in the end.

“We have one last game left now and I think that we should beat England. Everybody is up for the game because we want to stay unbeaten against them.

“This is my last year with the team and from a personal point I want to finish on a high and beating them would do that.”

And coach Billy Henderson is backing his class of 2013 to do just that, admitting that the standard of football never ceases to amaze him.

“Even though it was quite hair-raising and we didn’t make it easy on ourselves I was delighted with the win and the girls thoroughly deserved it,” said Henderson.

“I have been involved with the team since 2005 and every year the standard raises and this year was no different.

“But we want to finish on a high and beat England because we had a goal disallowed in the tournament for offside and it should have been allowed.

“So we want to finish the job and stay unbeaten and I am confident that the girls can do just that.”
