The assistant manager’s role at Fir Park is available after Steve Robinson’s departure to become Oldham Athletic gaffer.

McGhee said: “A lot of people have been asking about the job.

“Lots of them are really good candidates and people I would look to bring in.

“There is no front runner. There are about a dozen who would do the job.

“I’d like an appointment to be made as quickly as possible.

“Last week I took training on my own and I found it very difficult as there is a lot of organising to do.”

McGhee said he was disappointed by Robinson’s decision to quit Motherwell but understood his reasons.

“It was a shame Steve left,” McGhee said.

“But Steve and I had talked about the possibility of him one day becoming his own man at a big club down in England.

“His ultimate ambition was to go on his own.

“I’m disappointed it happened so soon and the timing is difficult.

“We have just started pre-season and I find myself without an assistant.”
