Aidan McGlynn wins British boxing title

Fighting Scots Gym member Aidan McGlynn became a semi professional British boxing champion at the Alona Hotel on Saturday night.

McGlynn, one of the stars of the Mossend-based gym run by Frank Gilluley, won his 82kg six round contest on points against Danny Zico.

“I was very impressed with Aidan,” Frank said. “He was against a very tough opponent but did very well.

“Aidan is getting better and better. He hit Zico – a much more experienced opponent – with some great punching.

“Aidan wore him down with some powerful body shots and Zico did very well to go the distance with him.

“Hopefully Aidan will be going for a European title next year.”

On a terrific night for Fighting Scots Gym members on the 11 fight bill, Aidan’s clubmates Paul Brannan and Ben McGivern – both of Bellshill – were also successful.

Brannan won on points in his six-round 60kg Celtic title contest against Pete Smith, while McGivern defended his 89kg Celtic title by stopping Cameron Rice in the fifth round.

“It was a great performance by Paul,” Frank added. “He is very consistent.

“And Ben got Rice with some powerful shots.

“Overall the night went very well with a great atmosphere and a great crowd.”
