Ansari, who lives in Lenzie and bowls for Lenzie Bowling Club outdoors and Cumbernauld Indoor Bowling Club indoors, defeated Canada’s Vincent Mai 6-6 11-9.

The victory comes as welcome boost to the 27-year-old bowler after he lost his opening two pool matches in the competition in Warilla, New South Wales.

Ansari lost 7-4 3-11 3-2 to Hong Kong’s Kevin Fung in his first match when he was unlucky to lose the deciding tiebreak and then went down 10-7 14-4 to Australian Jeremy Henry, the tournament favourite.

Henry has won three out of the last four World Cups and is playing on his home rink at Warilla.

However with 10 players in each of the competition’s two pools - and his game with Henry now out of the way - there is still plenty of time of Ansari to recover.

The winners of each pool go straight into the semi-finals with second and third playing off to decide who else makes up the top four.
