The awards ceremony, held at Motherwell Concert Hall, recognises and rewards local people and organisations that give outstanding commitment in the voluntary sector.

The club itself was one of four finalists in the Outstanding New Organisations Section, for providing and supporting the opportunity for blind and visually impaired bowlers to participate, enjoy and increase their sporting ability.

Despite being established for only two years they have won numerous Scottish and British titles along with international recognition for their players and it is regarded as a joy to see their enthusiasm and commitment to their sport and the satisfaction of their many invaluable helpers.

Founder and head coach Doreen Strachan was also nominated in the Volunteering in a Sporting Setting.

A bowler and umpire in her own right, she organises weekly coaching sessions in the Cumbernauld Indoor Stadium, trains new helpers, and supports the bowlers when travelling.

Doreen is also the main fund raiser, collecting revenue and applying for grants to enable the bowlers to compete both at home and abroad.

It was a very exciting night for the bowlers and helpers who were proud that their achievements had been recognised.

The club just missed out on the main award but were happy to receive the Certificate of Excellence for their sporting achievements and commitment to their club.

However celebrations were only delayed as Doreen Strachan took the award in her category, receiving a trophy and certificate in deserved recognition for all the time and hard work she puts into running a very successful club.

The club trains in Cumbernauld Indoor Stadium on Thursdays at 2pm. Anyone interested in joining would be made most welcome - further information from stadium manager Lorraine on 01236 727852.
