Balfron High hosts lacrosse championships

Balfron High School was the recent venue for a special competition for young lacrosse players.

The Central Region Pop Lacrosse tournament featured approximately 100 children of primary school age competing for medals and trophies.

A total of seven teams took part and most of the games were very evenly contested.

The competition was is split into two separate section - under-11 and open - with the winning under-11 team having the possibility of gaining selection to represent Scotland at the British Pop Lacrosse Championships in June.

In the under-11 semi-finals Strathblane were 3-1 winners over Balfron while Kippen edged home 5-4 over Drymen in the other semi.

Drymen beat Balfron 4-2 in the play-off for the bronze medal before Strathblane took the title, and the gold medal, with a 4-2 success over Kippen who had to settle for silver.

Allan’s finished fifth in the under-11s with Fintry sixth.

In the open event the same four teams were in the semi-finals and once again Balfron were denied 3-1 by Strathblane.

But in the other semi-final it was Drymen who progressed with a 3-2 win over Kippen.

Kippen took the bronze medal play-off match with a 3-0 win over Balfron before Drymen went on to take the gold, defeating Strathblane 3-1.

Again Allan’s finished in fith place in the open competition with Fintry sixth and Buchanan seventh.

As well as the team prizes there were also individual award at the competition for the Most Valuable Players with Thomas Reilly of Kippen Primary School winning the under-11 award and Finlay Watt of Drymen Primary the Open MVP.
