Black’s team maintain lead

Glasgow City maintain their position at the top of the SWPL after a 6-1 win over Heart of Midlothian, setting the side up nicely for the League Cup Final tomorrow (Wednesday).

In tricky conditions for both teams, with a constant gale force wind sweeping through the Alex Ferguson Park, City took the lead on 10 minutes.

A corner from the left was swung in by Erin Cuthbert and Denise O’Sullivan headed past on loan City keeper Autumn Farrell in nets for Hearts.

Despite City dominating the early possession and chances Hearts struck next and got back on level terms when Amy Harrison rose well to power her header from a free kick past the helpless Lee Alexander in the City goals.

The away side were level for only a few minutes as City regained the lead after Abbi Grant hit a fine strike past Farrell following a pass from City defender Nicky Docherty.

Fullback Docherty was provider once more on 25 minutes, this time crossing to the back post for Susan Fairlie and the in-form City striker made no mistake scoring from inside the six-yard box.

Grant then got her second of the match reacting well to a scramble in the box to make it 4-1 to City.

Just before half time, Fairlie got her second of the match and 7th League goal of the season as she brilliantly lobbed Farrell when through on goal.

In the second half, City continued to dominate and, despite having numerous attempts and hitting the woodwork, were only able to add one more goal to their tally, when Kerry Montgomery shot from 25 yards out into the roof of the net, to give City the comfortable victory.

Commenting on the win, City head coach Eddie Wolecki Black said: “It was obviously a difficult day weather conditions wise but I thought we coped with the elements well.

“It probably took their goal to spark us into life and I felt we responded pretty well and it was a comprehensive half time lead.

“After the break, the cup final starts to come into everyone’s mind and it seems to be more about not picking up an injury ahead of tomorrow on the back of the players’ minds and I can understand that.

“So, overall, we are still top of the table. We got the three points and scored six goals, so pretty happy with that.”

Glasgow City took on Hibernian yesterday (Wednesday) in the League Cup Final. The match is a 7.30pm kick off at Ainslie Park.
