Thomas strikes gold

YOUNG Thomas McLaughlin struck gold for Kilsyth Golden Gloves Boxing Club at the weekend in the Scottish Novice Championships.

In a heroic display he powered non-stop to overcome a tough opponent in the final and seal a fantastic win.

Also in championship action were Shaun Carroll who won silver with bronzes for Mark Shillinglaw and Jamie McLaughlin who just got pipped in his semi-final on a split desicion after the computer scored the bout a draw.

Head coach Gerry Donachie was ecstatic considering that this is the first season for the these young men and the clubs future looks in safe hands.

In the seniors Michael McDonald had to fight through prelims, quarter, semi and final over two days to claim the senior crown. The final saw him stop a boxer who had KO’d all his opposition before squaring up to the Golden Gloves champion. In Michael’s corner Francie Connor was beaming with pride as he recalled every punch thrown which will be up there in Kilsyth Golden Gloves history.

It was a busy weekend for the Kilsyth Club. Friday night also saw Derek Skinner triumph in Blantyre with a sensational stoppage win over Bannockburn’s James Spence. Derek will now be training for the Senior Western District Championships in mid November before bouts in Barrow in Furness and Airdrie to round off 2011.
