The John Cumming Stadium was a sea of yellow as hundreds took part in this year’s event to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

The stadium was packed to the rafters with record entries for both the family fun mile and the five mile road race, which started and finished at the stadium.

Trust development manager Kathleen Feeney said: “We are hoping that this is just the start of the event growing over the next few years.

“We could have an incredible legacy for people in the town. We saw a lot of brave people completing their run because they, or a family member or friend, have been affected by cancer.

“We are hoping that we will have a final total in the next couple of weeks.”

The real winner was the Beatson Cancer Charity with thousands of pounds raised thanks to the hard work of all the runners and organisers Carluke Development Trust.

Trust chairman Tom Sneddon said: “Hopefully everybody enjoyed themselves and if the enthusiasm of the fun run participants and the record numbers in the road race were anything to go by then I think the outcome is a resounding ‘yes’.

“There was a huge amount of determination and delight shown by all the fun runners as they crossed the finish line.

“The entries for the five mile event were greatly up on last year and indeed reached a record level, which is great.

“This was as a result of our official partnership this year with Beatson Cancer Charity secured by Kathleen Feeney, who is our development manager.

“Those of us who have been involved since the beginning never expected we would ever surpass some of the early participant numbers – but we certainly managed it this year.”

Although the final total raised by Carluke on the Run 2015 has still to be finalised, all the money raised for the Beatson will go towards the new Lanarkshire Beatson, which will be based in the grounds of Monklands Hospital.

Charlene Elliott, head of fundraising at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “Carluke on the Run was a truly fantastic event and we’re so proud to have been the event’s charity partner.

“The support we’ve received from the Carluke Development Trust, our runners, the volunteers and everyone who donated has been massive and we can’t thank everyone enough.

“Their support will go a very long way in the fight against cancer, now and in the future.

“More than one in three people are affected by cancer in the West of Scotland – the highest cancer rate in Europe.

“All money raised from this year’s event will go towards the new Lanarkshire Beatson at Monklands.”

The results of the fun mile and the five mile race are on the Trust’s website at www.carluketrust.org.uk
