Yobs torched a container behind one of the goals and the blaze quickly spread to the 3G pitch at the state-of-the-art Carnwath Road ground – the home of Carluke Rovers FC – turning a third of it into a black mess.

The damage will likely cost thousands of pounds to repair.

“This vandalism is mindless and a shocking act,” said Carluke Rovers manager Colin Slater.

“The pitch is a total mess.

“This is going to adversely affect Carluke Rovers and the whole community because ourselves and other sports clubs with players aged five to over-35 use the pitch.”

The extent of the damage means that stadium owner South Lanarkshire Council has switched Rovers’ home League Cup tie against Newmains this Saturday to Tileworks Park in Stonehouse.
