Cruel twist of fate

Just one save halted Queen’s Park’s journey through the Petrofac (formerly Ramsdens) Cup as a hard-fought game came down to penalties.

It was a much-changed team to that which faced Berwick Rangers in the last game of last season.

Survivors for this game were Lochhead, Mitchell, Quinn, Gibson and Davidson: the others have either moved on or were not selected.

Spiders were unlucky to go behind after Lavery delivered not so much a suckerpunch, more a sucker tap as the ball struck the inside of the post before hitting the back of the net.

However the wise money should never go against Gus McPherson’s men and so it was that Queen’s Park got right back in the game after Fotheringham managed to swing in a cross which McPherson met with his head.

The half ended with one apiece with the home side fired up.

But the second half ended the way the first did and it was the World Cup all over again with the uncertainty of penalties.

However, heroes became zeroes in this particular knock-out decider and so it was that Berry shot his ball over the bar while Tony Quin’s strike was saved by Berwick’s Bald to ensure the visitors went through to the next round by four penalties to three.

A cruel twist of fate.
