Cumbernauld ASC open meet proves massive splash hit

The Tryst certainly lived up to its moniker of ‘Meeting Place’ over the weekend for the 2016 Open Age Group and Senior Swim meet.

And Cumbernauld swimmers rose to the challenge against the highest level of competition, more than holding their own in the medal positions and producing a host of personal bests.

Craig Greenock was in fine form as he swept to the 14-year-old boys’ 50 metres and 100m freestyle and 50m and 100m butterfly events.

There were happy faces as Cumbernauld ASC welcome clubs from all over.

Sam Glen earned a silver in the 100m fly to accompany gold and silver in the 100m and 50m breaststroke and Kyle Duncan also reached the podium in this category, earning 50m breast and 50m back bronzes.

In the age 14 girls’ category Diane Tennant swam her way to silver medals in both the 100m free and breast while Chevonne Fraser also earned a bronze in the 50m back.

Emma Jeffrey was in top form in the girls 8-12 years category, earning an amazing three gold medals in the 50m free, 100m Freestyle and 50m to go with a bronze in the 100m breast.

Jonathan Cameron also managed to earn a bronze in the boys’ 50m back.

Judges keep a close eye on a potentially tight finish.

All of the Hill siblings swam their way to medals. Mark won gold in the boys’ 15 and over 50m fly while older sister Robyn medalled in both fly events, earning bronze in the 50m and 100m and younger sister Katie earned a bronze medal in the 50m breast after a photo finish.

In the girls’ age 13 category the medals were more evenly distributed.

Mhairi Stewart earned a gold and silver in the 50m backcrawl and 50m free, Neve McFadden swam her way to a bronze in the 50m fly.

Team-mate Elle O’Reilly took bronze for the 100m fly and Georgia Knox won a silver in the 100m breast.

The relay race was among the meets highlights.

For the boys, Michael Flynn powered his way to bronze in the 100 metre free.

There was time for reminiscing as long time club member and former captain Daniel Fisher returned from Edinburgh University with a flourish, powering his way to gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m open freestyle events and silver in the 50m with some amazing swims.

Highlight of the weekend was a mixed six-person relay event, with each of the clubs putting forward a team, which brought the crowd to a fever pitch as Cumbernauld A team narrowly edged out South Ayrshire for the gold.

The weekend was a tremendous success, with over 700 personal best times achieved by the swimmers.

Head coach Danny McGowan and his staff were delighted at the results achieved by the squad as they prepare for their annual Club Sprint Championships in two weeks.
