Defeats for Lenzie and Allan Glen's

Lenzie were left particularly disappointed to go down 40-36 to Millbrae, losing a BT West Division 2 game they appeared to have won several times over throughout the match.

Lenzie lost the customary early score to give the visitors a 7-0 lead, but responded well when home debutant Cameron Don ran 40 metres through the Millbrae defence to link with Murray Brown who sent a James Buick clear for a well worked try.

The Viewfield support were looking for more; however poor discipline by Lenzie at the breakdown allowed Millbrae to gain ground and take a 12-5 lead.

The home side looked dangerous when the ball was moved wide with Holdstock and Scouller linking well ably supported by Sonny Campbell and Alan Picken.

Don was causing problems for Millbrae and he scored an excellent try before the break to add to Lenzie prop Graham Condie’s try from close quarters to take Lenzie into a 22-12 lead.

The home side were now playing with wind and scored another well worked try through their most valuable player David Nisbet to take a comfortable lead.

But despite being in control of the game however they continued give needless penalties away and Millbrae scored from close range to keep them in the game.

However it was not long before centres Gregor Deacon and Ally Marshall put young Don in space to run in from 50 metres to restore a comfortable gap for the home side.

From the kick off Don ran clear again and was unlucky to pull up with an injury before he was able to score his third try.

Millbrae were still in the game and scored two further tries to close the gap before adding a late converted try to take a surprising lead by 33-31 with five minutes left.

Captain Jamie Letford led from the front and drove hard at the visitors’ defence and Nisbet broke clear to feed Scouller and McNeish before releasing speedster Buick to score in the corner for a great team try.

With time up both sides were surprised that the game kicked off and a further three minutes play elapsed before Millbrae scored another converted forward try to take the game.

Discipline at the breakdown was the major problem for Lenzie; once more however they did enough to win the game and the home support and coaches were very pleased with the performance of the young players on show.

Man of the match was the impressive Cameron Don.

Meanwhile Allan Glen’s went down 21-14 to Newton Stewart in their Division 1 clash at the Bearyards.

It took only three minutes for the league contenders to show their intention and opened the scoring with a try by Johnston after a series of pick up and go attempts to breach the home defence. Muir converted.

Well into the game Newton Stewart, again using the same tactics, allowed McDonald to score with Muir again converting but just before the break Murrell went over after the home side had been camped on the visitors’ line for a good few minutes. Watt converted to make the half-time score 14-7.

Glen’s scrum was destroying their opposition and gaining some useful ball against the head but the visitors were very proficient at the driving maul and general recycling.

Both sides defended well thus minimising the scoring, but some way into the second half Brawl scored for the visitors after some good backing up work by the backs. Again Muir converted.

Not to be out done Glen’s closed the gap again when Lennon picked up a loose ball on the opposition 22 line and beat the visiting defence to the line. Watt converted.

In the last few minutes Glen’s squandered several opportunities which could have tied the game and which would probably been a fair result.
