Easy win for Biggar Rugby Club

The match saw man of the match Kiwi Karetai Williams score a try on his last appearance before heading home to potentially play ITM rugby in his homeland.

“The boys did really well,” said Biggar president Alistair Stewart. “Seven tries to nil was a comprehensive victory.

“Karetai is a fairly significant loss to us.

“He’s got a trial over there with a view to playing ITM rugby, which is a level up.

“It would be a feather in his cap if he got that.”

Aside from the first points to Hill Jills, which were kicked by A J McFarlane, Biggar were never behind.

The Hartreemill team recorded a four try bonus point on top of the four league points for the win.

There were a few changes to Biggar’s starting XV as Craig Bachurewski, Davy Reive and Alisdair Sinclair were all unavailable, this allowing Dan O’Connell, David McArthur and debutant Thomas Steele to take their places.

It was great for Biggar fans to see Steele getting a run after some solid performances in the second XV.

Props Donald Voas (2), Calvin Henderson, centre Robbie Lavery, back row Douglas Notman, scrum half David McArthur and Williams all scored.

Biggar’s points tally was also boosted by a Richard Peacock penalty and three conversions.

Aside from Williams and the other try scorers there were also some very good performances from Ewan Stewart and Zander Lyon.

Meanwhile, Alistair revealed that discussions have begun with potential candidates with a view to finding a replacement for recently departed Biggar head coach Gavin Blackburn.

Alistair said: “It is not everybody who wants to travel to Biggar three times a week.

“We can’t afford to be too fussy but we are ambitious and I think we are an attractive proposition for a coach.

“There is a lovely family feel to the club and we are ambitious.”

Biggar are seventh in the league table with 44 points from 18 matches. This Saturday, the Hartreemill men travel to Falkirk for a league fixture which kicks off at 3pm.
