Emma sets sights on Spain success

The 18-year-old, who trains at Whitemoss AAC in East Kilbride, won a silver medal in the English Combined Events Championships in Sheffield in a very high standard competition, competing in hurdles, high jump, shot putt, long jump and 800 metres.

Emma had an excellent outing and scored close to her previous best scores in all events, amassing an amazing 3680 points.

And just three days later she received notification that she had been selected for the British under 20 team for an International Combined Events match in Salamanca, Spain, on February 20.

The match will see team GB face Spain, France and the Czech Republic and Emma will take on emerging talent from those countries. It’s Emma’s second call up for team GB having travelled to Paris last year.

Emma was accompanied to Sheffield by her training partner Emily Craig who, at 16, was one of the youngest athletes competing in the under-20 age group. In a very strong field of 25 athletes Emily made an impressive debut in this event by finishing 12th.

Both athletes are coached by Iain McEwan who said: “I was delighted with both girls.

“Emma had a very mature and almost flawless performance. She faltered slightly in the long jump by having a no jump in her first attempt, but recovered well with a super 574cm jump in her second attempt.

“Emily has just moved into this age group and has made the transition to the senior hurdle height look easy.”
