Celtic told to 'get rid' of former Sheffield United star after red card incident sparks anger
The controversial incident has stolen headlines after Sunday’s defeat to Hibernian at Parkhead
Celtic’s Scottish Premiership title defence was dealt a massive blow as Hibernian left Parkhead with all three points on Sunday.
The 2-1 defeat meant that the Hoops were left six points behind league leaders Hearts, making their task ever harder as they attempt to secure a fifth successive title. A key moment in the match occurred on 74 minutes, as centre-back Auston Trusty was sent off following an altercation with Jamie McGrath at a corner, where the American was alleged to have struck the Hibs player’s arm with excessive force after a VAR check.
The incident has led to much debate following the match, with the visitors scoring an 87th minute winner courtesy of Kai Andrews while playing against ten men. An appeal against the decision was swiftly rejected by the SFA, with Trusty set to miss the next three league matches after his second dismissal of the season.
‘Get rid’ - Alan Brazil rages after Trusty red card decision
Trusty signed for Celtic for £5million from English Championship club Sheffield United in 2024 and has been a regular for the Hoops since his arrival – but his days at the club could be numbered, according to talkSPORT Breakfast host Alan Brazil.
Appearing alongside former Rangers striker Ally McCoist, Brazil said: “Trusty – who I thought was alright when he first came – for me, beat it. Beat it. Out you go. Get rid of him.”
McCoist responded: “He’s got such a difference in his level of performances. It was the game in Italy I watched and thought ‘he looks a proper centre-back.'”
Brazil replied: “Something’s happened to him, he’s lost the plot. That was before the weekend.”
McCoist added: “Celtic appealed it [the red card] yesterday and it got knocked back. It’s ridiculous. The guy’s holding him and he just knocks his hand away. I don’t think it’s a sending-off.”
Martin O’Neill gives red card verdict as three-match suspension confirmed
Celtic boss Martin O’Neill said of the decision to send off Trusty: “I’ve spoken to Auston. At the end of the day you can’t do this if they’re the rules now.
“It doesn’t matter if someone is holding onto you in an attempt to break away. You can’t thrust in the manner he did to get away.”
He continued on the result: "It's a setback, that's all it is. We're still in the race. There's not much room for error but we can still fight back. I thought we were absolutely terrific. The players put heart and soul into the game. No complaints on that side whatsoever."
Trusty will miss the next three league games and will be absent for Sunday’s crunch Old Firm clash with Rangers at Ibrox, which neither side can afford to lose as they chase down Hearts. The 27-year-old will then be suspended for the clash with Aberdeen at Pittodrie and the subsequent meeting with Motherwell at Parkhead.
