Plymouth Argyle chief sends ‘important message’ to supporters with Celtic linked to star striker
PlymouthLive recently spoke to Plymouth Argyle chief executive officer Paul Berne. It comes with Celtic currently rumoured to be one of several clubs interested in signing their top goal scorer from last season.
The Scottish champions, along with English Football League Championship outfit Preston North End and a host of their divisional rivals, have all been linked with 24-year-old forward Lorent Tolaj.
The Switzerland youth international scored 21 goals in all competitions last season but it wasn’t enough to see the Pilgrims promoted out of League One. They finished eighth in the table, meaning they missed out on the play-offs, and it was previously reported that failure plus some financially concerns meant they might have to sell more than one important first team player.
Berne responded to those rumours firmly, saying: "We have planned that all the players we have got will be with us on day one (of pre-season). That's what we plan to do. The players come back to pre-season shortly and Tom (Cleverley) and the coaching staff will start on the prep on that basis.
"I'm not going to go into individuals. It's important to say there is no planned sales. The players that we have currently got with us are planned to be with us on day one of pre-season.
"We are in a much better place compared to last year when we had a lot of work to do (on the squad). We have got a lot of players who are in contract already into next year and these are players that we know can do great things in League One.
"It has been great to bring Wes to the club permanently, it's great to see Alex Hartridge bringing good League One experience to us, and great to see the club captain (Joe Edwards) sign on for another year. Our plan is to be in a really great position as we go into the start of next season."

Tolaj striker signed for Plymouth last summer after a spell further down the English Football Leagues with Aldershot and Port Vale. Prior to that he had been on the books at Brighton & Hove Albion and had spent time on loan at Cambridge United and Salford City and the former FC Sion youth player even had a short stint at Dundee but managed just two appearances for the Dark Blues in 2023.
