Celtic perform transfer U-turn as loan star recalled amid fresh injury concern + interest from Premiership rivals

Hoops centre-back returns to Celtic Park after spending the first half of the season on loan at Motherwell

Celtic have exercised their right to recall Stephen Welsh early from his loan spell at Motherwell - with the defender attracting interest from fellow Premiership rivals Aberdeen this month.

The 25-year-old centre-back, who was the subject of an approach from the Dons last week, was expected to see out the full season at Fir Park - a decision that was approved by axed head coach Wilfried Nancy.

However, the Frenchman’s dismissal has led to a change of heart with the Scottish champions performing a U-turn by deciding to bring Welsh back to the club earlier than anticipated.

The decision comes amid growing concerns that Auston Trusty has picked up a hamstring injury. The USA international appeared to be limping heavily after Saturday’s 4-0 Premiership win over Dundee United.

Welsh returns to first-team training with Martin O’Neill’s side today, with the interim Celtic boss sparking his players back to life at the weekend following a turbulent month under the leadership of Nancy.

Motherwell left with defensive void after Celtic ace returns to Parkhead following loan spell

The news will come as a bitter blow to fourth-placed Motherwell, who now have a major defensive void to fill but a return to North Lanarkshire isn’t completely off the cards for Welsh who has played some of the best football of his career under Jens Berthel Askou.

A club statement read: “Defender Stephen Welsh has returned to his parent club, Celtic.

“Celtic informed the club last night (Sunday) that they wished to exercise the recall option within the loan deal to bring Welsh back to Parkhead.

“Signing a season-long loan deal on Deadline Day in August, Welsh made 17 appearances for the Steelmen in all competitions this season. We want to thank Stephen for his hard work during his time at Motherwell and wish him the very best for the future.”

It remains to be seen what Celtic’s plans are for Welsh, having struggled defensively at times so far this term. With Cameron Carter-Vickers sidelined until this summer and fresh concern over Trusty’s fitness, the former Scotland Under-21 ace could be handed more game time.

There is also the chance that he could head to Pittodrie after managerless Aberdeen made contact with Celtic regarding Welsh’s availability.
