Celtic might have suffered yet more European disappointment in midweek but the Scottish champions will be eager to bounce back and extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table when they host Hibernian on Saturday.

Ange Postecoglou’s injury-hit squad sit bottom of Group F in Europe’s elite club competition after claiming just one point from four matches, but they have enjoyed a strong start to their domestic campaign.

The Hoops have won eight of their opening nine league fixtures with their only blemish coming against St Mirren last month. Since then, Celtic have found it difficult to rediscover their ruthless streak in front of goal, something that has cost them dearly in the Champions League.

They required a 95th minute winner from Giorgos Giakoumakis to grind out a 2-1 victory over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park last Saturday and will hope for a slightly more comfortable afternoon back on home soil.

Hibernian travel across the M8 after winning four out of their last five domestic games and currently sit in third place. However, they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Dundee United on Tuesday night, courtesy of Aziz Behich’s neat finish.

Prior to that setback, the capital club has recorded wins over Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Ross County and Motherwell to improve their standing in the table, with defensive solidity playing a key part of their recent upturn in fortunes.

Portuguese winger Jota was replaced at half-time in last weekend’s 2-1 victory over St Johnstone after feeling “sore” during the match before sitting out of Tuesday’s European clash against RB Leipzig.

He will miss a third consecutive match alongside Scotland international Turnbull due to an ankle issue and centre-back Welsh who is carrying a knock.

Skipper Callum McGregor and defender Carl Starfelt remain absent with knee injuries, but Liel Abada is fit to play after suffering a blow to his knee in midweek.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Postecoglou said: “Jota’s not available for tomorrow. We are just being conservative with him. We expect him to be back in training next week at some point so he won’t be available.

“Liel is fine, he has trained. The only other ones from the other night are David Turnbull who picked up a knock on his ankle and Welshy picked up a knock in training so they’re both out tomorrow. Everyone else is OK.”

Hibernian boss Lee Johnson has hinted at making several changes to his team this weekend after keeping the same starting XI for three straight matches.

Rocky Bushiri and Demetri Mitchell are expected to return, while Manchester United loanee Will Fish will be looking to build on his debut at Tannadice on Tuesday night.

Striker Kevin Nisbet is still recovering from crucial ligament damage and back-up goalkeeper Kevin Dabrowski remains sidelined.
