Celtic target that was once tipped to replace Joe Hart set to become available in intriguing transfer update
A one-time Celtic target is expected to be on the move in January
Croatia’s first choice goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic is reported to be on the verge of quitting Fenerbahce in the January transfer window.
Livakovic, who has represented Croatia on 71 occasions while playing regularly at the 2022 World Cup, was reported by several news outlets to have once been one of Celtic’s top transfer targets.
Throughout the summer of 2024, Livakovic was linked with Celtic after Joe Hart’s retirement, with AS Marca in Turkey, via Record Sport, claiming that the Scottish champions had even submitted a big-money offer for his services
Livaković, who has played the bulk of his career with Dinamo Zabreg, was only one year into his Fenerbahce career at the time and ended up remaining in Istanbul. Meanwhile, Celtic acted to bring in the experienced Kasper Schemeichel on a free transfer.
Schemeichel enjoyed an excellent debut season which saw him win a league and cup double, but the standard of his performances has come under scrutiny at various points this season, with Celtic’s defence as a whole failing to hit the standards they reached last term.
Livakovic could be on the move in January transfer window
Record Sport reports that Livakovic is likely to leave Fenerbahce in January opening the door for Celtic to potentially sign the 31-year-old if they are still interested in him.
Livaković has recently fallen down the pecking order in Istanbul and was farmed out to Girona at the start of the season. That move has gone disastrously with the goalkeeper not playing a single match for the Spanish side after his manager Míchel accused him of reportedly refusing to play a match.
He blasted: “Livakovic is a spectacular person, but he has a timeline with objectives different from Girona’s. He needs to play for the World Cup, not for Girona. He told me this himself; he is a sincere person. He told me he didn’t want to be here, that he wanted to play for another team because if he played with Girona, he wouldn’t be able to play for another team.”
Reports in Croatia claim former club Dinamo Zagreb have tabled a loan deal with a £3.5m option to buy - a package which the Hoops could potentially match if he was to emerge as a player of interest once again.
Martin O'Neill has made it clear he's in the market for quality this month. It’s not yet clear if a goalkeeper is one of his priority signings, but does appear a move for former striker Kyogo could be on the cards after his struggles at Birmingham City.
Celtic are currently trailing Rangers and Hearts in the title race and have a challenging task ahead of them if they are to win a fifth successive league title after dominating the landscape of Scottish football for most of the last 15 years.
