Rangers hero backs Duncan Ferguson to put Northern Irish football in spotlight as he delivers glowing verdict
T he former Rangers striker is backing his fellow Scot to make waves in Belfast after praising his enthusiasm and passion for the game
Ally McCoist has thrown his support behind Duncan Ferguson following the former Rangers striker's appointment as manager of Glentoran - backing the Scot to make a significant impact in Northern Irish football.
Ferguson has taken on a fresh challenge at the East Belfast club, with the opportunity to make his mark in the dugout again and bring his considerable experience of the game to the NIFL Premiership.
And McCoist, who knows Ferguson well, believes Glentoran have secured somebody who will throw absolutely everything into the role. The legendary former Ibrox striker was full of praise for his fellow Scot.

Speaking to talkSPORT Bet Online Casino, McCoist said: “I spent a couple of days with the big man at the World Cup in New York. We had a great bit of fun together. He's a brilliant lad and he is bursting with enthusiasm to get back into the game. So bearing that in mind, I'm delighted for him.”
There is certainly no shortage of personality when it comes to Ferguson, whose playing career was characterised by his physical presence, competitive edge and commitment. Those qualities made him a hugely recognisable figure in British football, particularly during his time at Everton, where he became something of a cult hero.
However, it is his enthusiasm for the coaching side of the game that has particularly impressed McCoist, who expects Glentoran supporters to see a manager completely invested in their club.
“They will be getting somebody who will be 100% committed to that job, because he loves being on the training ground with the players and he loves game days,” McCoist added. “I'm delighted for him and really interested to see how he does.”
Ferguson backed to make waves in Belfast
McCoist's endorsement will carry plenty of interest for those of a Rangers persuasion given his own connection to Ferguson and the shared Scottish football background that links the pair.
Ferguson now has the opportunity to transfer his significant playing and coaching experience into management, with Glentoran hoping his arrival can help them take another step forward.
The Belfast outfit have already been enjoying a positive campaign, sitting third in the league table behind Larne and Linfield.
The appointment also promises to bring additional attention to the Northern Irish game, something McCoist believes should be welcomed by everyone involved. Ferguson's profile, personality and connections within British football could help shine a brighter spotlight on a league that does not always receive the recognition it deserves.
And McCoist is particularly enthusiastic about what the former Rangers forward could bring to the competition as a whole.
“One thing he'll do is bring a lot of focus back onto that league, which can only be a good thing. I've got everything crossed for him,” McCoist added.
