A bulk of Celtic players have been called up to represent their countries for a final time this year as the last international break of 2024 plays out. While some are enjoying strong runs, others haven’t had the desired time in camp they had been hoping for.
Arne Engels has come under fire for his latest performance for Belgium, after his side lost 1-0 to Israel. Meanwhile, Liam Scales’ last Republic of Ireland game of the year ended in a very disappointing manner. Ireland were up against England, and despite keeping their rivals at bay for more than 50 minutes, the clash at Wembley ended in a bitter defeat for the Boys in Green.

While the centre-back had performed well in the first half an kept Kane quiet, he was given his marching orders not long after the break. After already being booked just before the break, Scales was shown a second yellow for bringing down Jude Bellingham inside the box, which resulted in England’s first goal of the evening.
The penalty opened the floodgates and goals from Anthony Gordon, Conor Gallagher, Jarrod Bowed and Taylor Harwood-Bellis followed. Following the match, Clinton Morrison slammed Scales’ decision-making: “It's the worst yellow card you can get as a centre-back. I used to do stuff like that and now I look at it and think, that's stupidity.”
Goalscorer Kane was also asked about the decision in a post-match interview with ITV Sport and admitted his pass to initially set up Bellingham was ‘one of his best’ he had contributed.

Former Ireland striker Morrison also continued with his thoughts on the incident. He told BBC Sport: “I said don’t get involved in nonsense and it is poor from Liam Scales. It is a foul, but I don’t think it is a yellow card. It is harsh.”
The England clash marked a wrap for the Republic of Ireland’s international fixtures this year. Scales will return to Celtic ahead of their next Scottish Premiership clash against Hearts this weekend.
