Scott Brown suggests Celtic transfer move over 'powerful' star rival will struggle to keep beyond deadline day
Former Hoops captain has a transfer suggestion for his old club
Celtic hero Scott Brown reckons his former club should be trying to sign ‘powerful’ Dundee United left back Will Ferry as a back up to Kieran Tierney.
The Hoops have expressed interest in the 25-year old Republic of Ireland international - who bagged a wonder goal on his weaker right foot from outside the box against Kilmarnock at the weekend. Analysing his performance on Sportscene, Brown was impressed with what he saw and thinks Celtic should take notes. The Hoops have until Thursday’s transfer market deadline to get any further deals over the line.
While the ability of current Hoops left back Tierney has rarely been question - his fitness record very much has in recent years. The 29-year old has an unfortunate injury history and as recently as the weekend was forced off with what manager Martin O’Neill claims ‘wasn’t cramp’.

Brown makes case for Hoops to sign Ferry
As Celtic search for a backup for Tierney who may be called upon from the get-go, Ferry has been one of the names shortlisted. Brown reckons his old club could take a chance on the Tangerines defender. He said: “Will Ferry for me was incredible today from start to finish, and they will do well to hold onto him. I think if you’re looking at Celtic at this moment in time, he’s similar to Kieran (Tierney).
“He’s powerful, he wants to drive forward, very good crosser of the ball. I think a lot of people naturally think he just wants to go forward all the time, but he’s a very, very good defender, that’s what Kieran is as well. It would be a very good move for Celtic if they go and snap him up, because there’s been a bid for £1.7million already, and he didn’t want to go. It’s quite a cheap option to go and hopefully get a person who knows the league.”
The left back has been a star performer for Jim Goodwin since signing from EFL side Cheltenham Town in June 2024. Last season, Ferry won the prestigious Men's Player of the Year and Men's Players' Player of the Year awards at Tannadice.

Tierney injury not ‘cramp’
Due to fitness concerns, O’Neill likes to rest Tierney as much as possible, therefore it was no surprise when he was substituted off in the 70th minute against Falkirk for Auston Trusty. While he appeared to be looking sluggish, O’Neill claims he originally though he was suffering from cramp, but revealed this wasn’t the case. He said after the game: “Kieran came off. I thought it was cramp he’d had, but it wasn't. I’m genuinely not sure at this minute (about the severity). I need to find out from the physios and medical staff about how that is, but we'll see.”
