Petrofac Training Cup, first round

Clyde notched up their first victory of the new season and their first competitive win under new boss Barry Ferguson.

The Broadwood side had an impressive win over Scottish League One side Ayr United in the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup.

Scott Durie, David Gray, David Sinclair and Scott McManus – the Bully Wee’s four new signings – were all included in Ferguson’s starting line-up.

The home side started well and in the opening minutes Kevin Watt had a shot from the edge of the box just miss the target, while a John Sweeney’s attempt was blocked by a defender.

However, eight minutes into the game Clyde took the lead. A clever pass from Sweeney found Watt on the right wing and his cross was prodded past David Hutton in the United goal.

Ayr almost grabbed an equaliser following a mix-up between Marsh and Barclay, but the home side recovered were soon two up. Scott Ferguson was brought down at the edge of the box, and Sweeney made no mistake with the spot kick.

Clyde continued to control the game with McManus and Sinclair both missing out on chances to increase the Bully Wee’s scoreline before the half-time break.

The second half was more evenly contested and Ayr managed to test Jamie Barclay on a couple of occasions, with an Alan Forrest free-kick also just missing the target.

Sinclair’s long-range volley almost caught out a back-peddling Hutton for a third Clyde goal, but there was no further scoring before the full-time whistle, and Clyde’s place in Tuesday’s second round draw was confirmed.
