Colts finish with a flourish

Cumbernauld Colts Ladies finished their home programme in style with a 9-1 thumping of Murieston in their final home match of the 2015 season at Broadwood on Sunday.

But although Cumbernauld eventually ran out comprehensive winners over the bottom side in the SWFL1 table, they were given an early scare.

The visitors opened the scoring after just five minutes as Devine took advantage of a defensive error to finish past Stevenson.

That caused Cumbernauld some concern as, statistically, the home side haven’t performed well when they lose the opening goal.

But this turned out to be a result which bucked that trend.

After going behind there was a nervy five minute spell while the home side worked themselves back into the match.

However they were eventually settled when two goals in a five minute spell from Louise Magilton turned the game for the home side.

A third came on the half hour when Kerr side footed in a Fern corner after Brown in the Murieston goal failed to collect the cross.

The pick of the first half goals came from Rebecca Young with seven minutes remaining until the break.

Young set off on a solo run from her own half, evading several challenges before slotting past Brown.

The goals continued to flow after the interval and Magilton was to get her hat-trick, netting from the penalty spot just before the hour mark.

The award came after Burgon handled on the line instinctively stopping a goalbound header when Hutchison looked likely to convert a Frances Fern corner.

Burgon was given a straight red for stopping a ‘goal’ before Magilton converted the spot kick convincingly.

The match had already slipped away from the visitors and being reduced to 10 players for the remaining half hour was to make an already difficult task seem near impossible.

Colts kept up the pressure and a brace from Fern and further goals from substitutes Porter and Keatings completed the scoring as the home side played out the match to finish convincingly 9-1 victors against the league’s bottom side.

To their credit Murieston did compete until the end and went close as they created several half chances.

Afterwards Colts manager Julie McSherry said she was delighted with the win and at seeing recent signing Louise Magilton get her first goals for the club.

She said: “We were a little nervy at the start and after going behind it looked like Murieston would continue to be our bogey team. This was our first win in four or five matches against them.

“When we got back into the match it was a huge relief to us on the sideline. After getting our nose ahead there was only really going to be one winner.

“It was pleasing to see Louise open her account for us.

“She’s been extremely influential since she’s come into the squad, going close to scoring on numerous occasions and thoroughly deserved her player of the match award.

“The way we passed the ball for some of our goals was sublime to watch.”

Prior to kick-off both sides joined forces to show their support to the Show Racism The Red Card Fortnight of Action 2015.
