Colts say farewell

Knowing a win in this match would confirm their fourth place finish in the division, the Cumbernauld Colts recognised it paled into insignificance as Scottish Women’s Football said goodbye to two of their stalwart supporters.

Cowdenbeath Ladies FC played their last ever match, and referee Terry Donnelly refereed his last ever match.

The visitors put the emotion of events to the back of their mind as they raced to a two goal lead inside the first six minutes. Frances Fern opened the scoring in the fourth minute and her strike partner Sarah Wardlaw quickly added a second shortly after.

Wardlaw got her second and her side’s third to complete the first half scoring in the 39th minute with a deft finish from another Rebecca Young cross into the box.

Inside the first five minutes of the restart the visitors got another two goals. In a replica of the first half, Fern was first to add to the scoreline with her side’s fourth on the 47th minute and Wardlaw completed her hat-trick on the 50th minute.

Just before the hour McIntyre completed the Colts’ scoring with her side’s sixth after Keir in the Cowdenbeath goal had parried another Wardlaw effort.

It was seemingly fitting that the hosts were to have the last say and completed the scoring with their consolation effort on the 65th minute. Hollie McIntosh tapping in after Stevenson saved a Lauren Wheatly effort.

A Colts’ spokesperson said: “So, we say goodbye to the 2014 season knowing we could have performed better in some matches, had a little better luck with injuries, absence’s and decisions during matches. However, we’re pleased we’ve finished the season strongly with 13 goals in our last two matches. It’s sad for that we won’t be competing against the girls of Cowdenbeath Ladies FC again.

“They’ve become good friends in their days in the sport and we wish them all well with their lives after football, and hope to see them at the side of a park somewhere, some day, supporting us.

“It was fitting Terry Donnelly’s last appointment was in charge of our last match against each other, as he’s been the man in the middle of many of our matches throughout the last ten seasons.”
