Cumbernauld Colts chairman delighted with Lowland League debut

The club’s senior team, under Craig McKinlay and James Orr, has exceeded the expectations of many as they close in on a top four finish.

And the club was also given a tangible reward for their efforts, as well as a sign of a bright future, when Colts’ under-20s lifted the Lowland League Cup with a dramatic 3-2 win over East Kilbride at New Tinto Park in Govan.

Stewart admitted: “We are absolutely delighted with the way our first season within the Scottish Lowland Football League set-up has gone.

“Our senior team have competed way above our expectations and to be sitting fourth in the league is a fantastic achievement.

“Our young under-20s, also in their first season at this level, have also equipped themselves extremely well and to have won the League Cup in their first season is a great success.

“Going forward the under-20s, along with our academy teams, will feed our senior side and a number of our young players have already tasted first team action, with Jordan Pirrie having stepped up to the senior squad for next season.

“Both the senior and under-20s leagues are a really good standard and well worth a watch.

“It was a significant milestone for the club creating the town’s own senior set-up with the SPFL just one step away. I would encourage the Cumbernauld public to get along to support the club, I am sure they won’t be disappointed.

“Back in 2012, following our investment in the new 3G pitch at Broadwood Stadium, I indicated that the stadium platform would provide the infrastructure for the club’s further accelerated development.

“This has proven to be the case and with NLL commitment to the club’s long term future at the stadium we look forward to many more successful years building a legacy for future generations.”

Colts are at home to Selkirk on Saturday.
