Cumbernauld well beaten

From the kick-off the visitors attacked United and in the fourth minute striker Joel Kasubandi had the ball in the net but was offside.

Clydebank continued on the offensive but a good Cumbernauld move on 11 minutes saw Steph McDonald find Dom O’Halloran whose effort cleared the bar.

However it was nearly all Clydebank and Alan Vezza came close with a header before Steven Young got through on goal but was thwarted by ’keeper Jamie McGowan.

Five minutes from half-time a terrific shot from Young brought out wonderful flying save from McGowan.

It seemed as if United would miraculously keep a clean sheet until the break but in the 45th minute a long ball reached Mark Burbridge in the clear and the winger ran on to steer ball past helpless McGowan.

Just after the resumption Clydebank were awarded a penalty when United skipper Ryan Sullivan handled in the box but Nicky Little’s spot kick was well saved by McGowan, his third penalty save in recent matches.

Cumbernauld then had a short period of pressure and were rewarded when ’keeper Robert Tiropoulos fumbled the ball and Alan Clark banged home the equaliser.

But on the hour mark the visitors regained the lead when Kasubandi headed past McGowan.

Three minutes later Burbridge scored a third goal for the visitors and not long afterwards, from a through ball, Little made it 4-1 as confident Clydebank ran riot.

Just before the end substitute Jordan Shelvey added a fifth goal as Cumbernauld slid dangerously near relegation with only four games to play.

Cumbernauld United almost pulled off a sensational victory with 10 men at Guy’s Meadow last Wednesday against lowly Bellshill.

Bellshill opened the scoring in the 15th minute when a low Barry McGowan cross was met by Byrne.

In the 38th minute Bellshill were awarded a penalty when Scott McHaffie was adjudged to have fouled an Athletic attacker. He was shown a red card and James Brophy made it 2-0 from the spot.

United reduced the leeway in the 53rd minute when Steph McDonald’s free-kick beat Mark Peat in the visitors’ goal.

The gallant 10 men’s efforts seemed in vain until the 87th minute when McGuigan was fouled by Peat in the box and McDonald beat the ’keeper to level the scores.

Three minutes later a sensational turnaround seemed complete when Dickson took a pass from McDonald to crash the ball home.

But the excitement wasn’t over. In added time Bellshill were awarded a free-kick and Nicoll’s long ball into the United box eluded everyone to land in the net.

In the aftermath of the goal United’s Alan Clark was shown a red card and another was shown to coach John Crooks.
