Curtis Main: Table topping Jambos could be in for rude awakening against Well

Main (26) thinks the hard working Steelmen – who earned their first league win of the campaign in a 3-1 success at bottom club Dundee on Saturday – have the style to derail the high flying Jambos.

The former Portsmouth forward told the Motherwell Times: “We’ll be fully prepared to test their resolve early doors and we’ll see exactly what they’re made of.

“A couple of the teams have started quite well.

“Obviously Hearts are going well early doors. But early doors, that’s all it is.

“League campaigns are all about consistency and doing it over an extended period of time.

“It’s ok doing it for three or four games, but the teams that are the most consistent over the full campaign will end up where they deserve.”

Motherwell’s consistency this season will surely be helped by having Main, Danny Johnson, Conor Sammon and the fit again Ryan Bowman back in what is now an impressive looking four strikers for manager Stephen Robinson to pick from.

“I’m sure having four quality strikers will make a difference as the season goes on,” Main said.

“Obviously the boys that aren’t playing are chomping at the bit.

“That goes for everybody, not just strikers, right the way through the team.

“The standard’s gone up I would say this year. Coming into training every day has been really good, really high standard.

“So it’s obviously proving worthwhile on the pitch.”

Main felt that Motherwell’s 3-1 win at Dens Park – their first league success of the season – was well merited.

“Coming away from home’s never easy,” he said.

“I think we played quite well for the majority of the game and fully deserved the three points.

“I’m not worried about not scoring in the league yet.

“First and foremost we do our job as a team.

“We win games. Obviously the individuals that score the goals get a little bit more press.

“But it’s a team game and at the moment we’re grinding those wins out as a team.”

Main finished by revealing his frustration at Motherwell not having a game this weekend due to the international break.

“I’d rather just keep playing,” he said.

“I’d rather the games come constantly. I like to play football.

“We’ll still work hard with the time that we’ve got without a game.

“We’ll put it to good use and we’ll be ready to go for the next game.”

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson has assembled a fine squad, with Johnson, a resurgent Gael Bigirimana and Allan Campbell netting their goals in Saturday’s victory in the City of Discovery.

“Danny Johnson is really finding his form,” Robbo said.

“We keep pulling those boys out of the bag.

“He’s definitely not the finished article, but he’s a goalscorer and they’re priceless.

“We’ve done that with a few people, they come up here, score goals and we’ve sold them on.

“I think we’ve got a long way to go with Danny, but see when he can score those goals you’ve got a chance.”

Robbo said that Johnson and Elliott Frear had both suffered dead legs in the game.

“We know what Elliott can do,” Robbo said.

“He’s come on, he’s set up another goal. He’s knocking right on the door, a lot of competition.”

The man Frear came on for after 53 minutes – Chris Cadden – cut a frustrated figure as he bashed the dugout in apparent rage at being taken off.

Robbo said: “Chris wasn’t disappointed with my decision to bring him off. I think he was going to give me a kiss and thank me!

“Chris has pulled us out of the mire so many times.

“He’s been one of my most consistent players since I came to this football club.

“I love him to bits but he didn’t have one of his better games did he?

“We have a lot of strength on the bench.

“Elliott comes on and sets the goal up. We’ll see Chris a lot better than that. He was just disappointed in his own performance.”
