Holders Harestanes moved into the sixth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup with a 2-1 win over Polmont at Merkland on Saturday.

Harestanes started unusually slowly and Polmont made a good early break down the right. A rather high cross came in but their man could only head well over.

A good strike by Fitzsimmons had potential but a deflection took it wide.

A good header by Polmont was going in under the bar but Travers rose to grasp with both hands and at the other end another shot by Fitzsimmons brought a save out of the keeper.

The second half opened with a low shot by McLaughlin which the keeper turned for a corner.

Polmont took the lead with a quick break through the middle. Defenders were lost with a slip to the left, followed by a low drive into the far right corner.

Young had a decent chance for an equaliser but shot straight into the keeper’s arms.

Harper did manage to lob the keeper but a defender got back to clear.

The equaliser finally came as Black burst down the right. He fed McLaughlin whose shot was palmed out by the ’keeper but fell to Harper who calmly collected and picked his spot.

Sheer determination from Fitzsimmons put Harestanes ahead.

Despite being shoved, jostled, pulled and kicked as he broke through, he played a one-two with Young and from the tightest of angles beat the ’keeper to find the far right corner.

Harestanes are due to face Riverside in the sixth round at Merkland this Saturday.
