42-year-old assistant manager David Menelaws scores dramatic late winner for Bellshill Athletic!

An incredible end to last Saturday’s clash at home to Maybole Juniors saw 42-year-old Bellshill Athletic assistant boss David Menelaws net a late winner to put ’Hill two points clear at the top of West of Scotland Conference A.

“I’m over the moon to be top of the league,” Bellshill manager Derek Wilson told the Times and Speaker.

“Davie is great. We threw him on with 20 minutes to go to try and get the winner. He’s always going to score goals in the box if he gets a chance.

“He’s maybe not got the legs now, right enough, but all credit to him.

“Matthew Clarke had struck the ball, the keeper parried it to his right and Davie was there just to knock it in.

“He didn’t do a cartwheel to celebrate. He just ran away and put his hand up.

“We were over the moon with that, but we’ll never hear the end of it.

“Davie does all the training so he keeps himself fit.

“Hats off to him because he was always wanting a chance. He got a chance and he took it, but that’s what he’s done all his career. He’s been a good juniors man and scored goals wherever he went.”

Bellshill dominated the first half on Saturday but only had Danny Haskim’s 34th-minute rebound strike from an acute angle – after Dylan McGuigan’s initial effort was saved – to show for it.

“The first half we were great,” Wilson said. “They never came into it at all.”

But the hosts weren’t as good after the interval and they were stunned by a 54th minute Maybole equaliser before Menelaws earned them the points with his dramatic 86th-minute winner.

Bellshill are next in league action at St Roch’s this Saturday, kicking off at 1.45pm.

“I think Davie wants a start this Saturday, but we have more of a squad available,” Wilson added.

“We’re building a great squad and everybody is enjoying it, but Davie might be there or thereabouts again just in case I need him.”
