Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson misses out on Football Writers' Award but Allan Campbell still in running

Motherwell FC gaffer Stephen Robinson – who made the final shortlist after a brilliant season – has missed out on winning the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Manager of the Year Award.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has been named as top boss by the nation’s written press, after leading the Hoops to their ninth consecutive top flight crown in a coronavirus-shortened season in which they also won the Betfred Cup.

Fellow Northern Irish manager Robbo (45) - had been in the running as he had Motherwell playing attractive, attacking football for much of the season and progressed the careers of new signings like Declan Gallagher, Liam Polworth and Chris Long.

Incredibly, Motherwell’s third place finish was achieved on a shoestring budget and despite not having star midfielder David Turnbull - who would have joined Celtic for £3.25 million last summer but for a troublesome knee injury which was subsequently operated on - out for virtually the whole campaign.

Despite that, ’Well finished higher than Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts, the latter of whom were relegated.

But Motherwell are still in the running to win the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year prize, as the club’s Scotland under-21 midfielder Allan Campbell has made the final shortlist.

Combative and skilful midfielder Campbell was arguably the Steelmen’s most consistent performer during the campaign, making 37 appearances in league and cups and netting six goals.

And he played all five qualifiers for Scotland under-21s in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

Campbell, who is up against Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson, St Johnstone’s Ali McCann and Hearts defender Aaron Hickey, will find out if he has won the award over the next few days.
