Left sided or central defender McGinley (23), who is joining the Steelmen on a two-year contract after leaving English League Two outfit Forest Green Rovers, made his one and only senior appearance for home town club Boro in the high scoring Carabao Cup first round encounter against Notts County at the Riverside Stadium two years ago.

The match finished in a 3-3 draw before Boro - for whom McGinley was one of seven debutants to get game time on the night - ultimately prevailed 4-3 in a penalty shootout to reach round two.

However, unable to force his way into the first team starting line-up again, McGinley - who had played a total of 34 games for Middlesbrough's youth sides and also spent 11 games on loan at English League Two outfit Wycombe Wanderers - was soon loaned to another League Two side, Forest Green Rovers.

He then signed a permanent 18-month deal at The New Lawn Stadium, making 71 appearances through until the end of the cornavirus-shortened 2019-20 campaign.

And the player is now itching to get going with Motherwell in the Scottish top flight, which is due to start on August 1.

He told the MFC website: “I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve been up the last few days and got myself settled ahead of training with the boys for the first time, and I’m ready to get going.

“It’s a chance for me to come and develop my game further, and work with a coach in Stephen Robinson who has a track record of making players better.

“Obviously it’s my first experience of playing in Scotland. But I’ve heard so many good things about Motherwell and I’m excited to be a part of it.”
