Sunday’s draw pitted the Fir Parkers – who were seeded – against Callum Davidson’s Perth outfit.

The sides’ most recent encounter came in the league on Saturday, September 12, when an Allan Campbell strike secured a 1-0 success for the Steelmen.

As a seeded side, Motherwell couldn’t have faced a tougher draw than St Johnstone, as the only two other unseeded teams they could have drawn were Ross County – whom ’Well recently thumped 4-0 in a league game – and St Mirren, who are only one point off the bottom of the league table with eight points from their 11 games.

Motherwell have already reached the Betfred Cup final under their manager Stephen Robinson, qualifying for the Hampden showpiece in the 2017-2018 season after beating Aberdeen 3-0 and Rangers 2-0 in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

But the Steelmen were then defeated 2-0 by Celtic in the final.
