Tony Watt interview: Motherwell FC star talks video games, Devante Cole signing and Bulgaria sunshine

'Well striker Watt (26), who revealed that if he wasn’t a footballer he’d probably be a ‘gamer’, hailed Cole's arrival until the end of the season following his exit from Doncaster Rovers.

He said: “I think any competition in the forward areas is good for us, especially when I want to be on my toes this year. I want to be fighting with somebody for a position and I’ve got a lot of players to do that with now.

“There’s a lot of quality in the forward areas and I think the manager (Stephen Robinson) knows that, if somebody doesn’t work hard, then they’ll be out the team.

“And that’s just the way it should be.

“If you’re at a smaller club, maybe they don’t have people to push each other. But now I believe Motherwell are pushing to get a bigger and better look about them.”

’Well – whose next league fixture is at St Mirren a week on Saturday after a slow start – are ninth in the table.

“I don’t think it’s been a really bad start,” Watt said.

“I think we’ve just been finding our feet obviously with Europe and games it’s a tough start. Also, it’s a new normal with this lockdown and no fans, and I think we’ve actually started not too badly.

“I think we’re one win away from fifth and we’ve already played both Old Firm sides.”

Well-travelled Watt, whose interesting career has also included stints at club sides in Belgium, England, Wales and Bulgaria, is settled at Motherwell, although his contract expires at the end of this season.

“Bulgaria was nice,” he said. “It was always sunny and we lived in the middle of the town centre. We didn’t really see any of the bad parts, to be honest. Abroad was good. I don’t mind being away but, now that I’m home, this is the most settled I’ve been.

“At the end of the season, we’ll see what’s happening. But I’d like to get as many games under my belt as possible and get myself better as a player, and improve, and this seems to be the perfect place for me at this moment.

“I think it’s a family club on and off the pitch and I think they push you to a limit.

“They don’t want you just to finish eighth, ninth or 10th.

“To not finish in the top six this year would be a massive under-achievement, with the players and manager we’ve got, and the club as a whole.

“Now it’s just about scoring goals and staying in the team and hopefully I can do that.”

We couldn’t let Watt leave the interview without reminiscing about the night he became a superstar by scoring the winner for Celtic in a stunning 2-1 home success over Barcelona in the Champions League in November 2012.

He said: “It’s all in the past now. It’s one of those things that will stay with me forever and I will take that.

“A lot of people say it’s positive, a lot of people say it’s negative, but I’m happy enough with it.”
